Nick Faldo MBE is one of the best known golfers in the U.K. Hailing from Welwyn Garden City in England his love for golf started when he borrowed some clubs from his neighbour after watching Jack Nicholus play the 1971 Masters.
Before Golf, nick was a carpet fitter and technically still was when he won the English Amateur Championship and the British youths championship in 1975.
Nick turned professional in 1976 at the age of 19. Faldo didn’t have to wait long for success. He finished 8th on the European Tour Order of Merit in 1977 and 3rd in 1978 and won a European Tour event in each of those seasons. At 21, Nick became the youngest player to appear in the Ryder Cup at the age of 21.
After being dubbed “Nick Foldo” by the British Tabloids, Nick decided he needed to refine his game before he could become a strong contender in major championships. He spent the mid 1980’s remodelling his swing with his tutor David Leadbetter, causing his performances dropped off for a couple of years until 1987 when he was playing better than ever. It was that year when he claimed his first major title at the Open Championship - he even managed to beat Paul Azinger by one shot without even getting a birdie in the final round!
It was in the late 80’s, early 90’s where Nick was the best player in the world, composed under pressure, intimidating to his opponents and became the man to beat in the major championships.
Although he is one of the most successful golfers, personally Nick hasn’t been doing so well. With three divorces and numerous affairs under his belt, we definitely think that he’s better at the whole golf thing!
