The Chip Shot - How To

chip shot

The Chip - one of the most simple shots in the game of golf but so many golfers struggle with it throughout their golfing lives. There is hope though if you can’t quite get this shot. Here are our three tips to a great chip shot.

  • Let the club lift the ball, don’t try to scoop it up.
  • Accelerate into impact.
  • Aim to pitch the ball one or two yards on the green with it’s first bounce
  • When you first approach the shot, address the ball with your feet close together and the ball slightly nearer your back foot than your front. Now relax, open your shoulders a little and place your hands ahead of the ball. When it comes to the crunch, focus on your swing not on trying to rocket your ball into the sky. If correct, the angle of the club head will take the ball into the air without any effort. Keep your weight on your front foot (it will make sure your hands arrive in front of the ball at impact) and swing the club back, making sure you swing with your arms and shoulders rather than your wrists.

According to contrary belief, the distance the ball will travel depends on your backswing and not on how hard you hit the ball. If you’re only playing the ball a short distance, make a short backswing. On a long distance use a long backswing.

  • General Rule
  • Your backswing should be the same length as your follow through (like it would if you were rolling the ball underarm)

Once you’ve mastered your backswing, it’s time to accelerate through the ball. Whether you take a long or short backswing you must always make sure you attack the ball. If you quit on the shot and don’t attack full pelt you are likely to fluff the shot. Accelerating down through the back of the ball will not only give you a good length, it will also leave a little backspin which will make the ball check when it hit’s the green, giving you more control in your chip shot.
