Handicaps - one of the reasons golf is so popular. In golf, your handicaps mean anyone can play with anyone. The true definition of a handicap in golf is the amount of strokes which a player is allowed to remove from his total score for a round.
It is helpful to think of a handicap as a headstart, which is given by more skilful players to the weaker ones! The better the player, the lower their handicap will be.
So, in theory it means that Tiger Woods (scratch handicap) could play me (24 handicap) and the game would be equal! Can this game get any better!
It is important to keep your scores on your scorecard as the handicap system is very confusing. Once you’ve finished your round you should find it easier to work out if you’ve kept your scorecard.
Highly skilled players reach scratch level and super good players can even enter positive figures - meaning they have to ADD strokes to their total. Any golfer that reaches that level is good enough to turn pro. All professional tournaments are played as scratch without handicaps.
The normal maximum handicap is:
Men: 28
Women: 36
